Saw II lets it rip

SAW II (Darren Lynn Bousman). 101 min. Opens Friday (October 28). For venues and times, see Movie Listings. Rating: NNNN

Rating: NNNN

Saw II is a gory, grim, suspenseful shocker that continues and expands the gruesome premise of the 2004 original without descending into self-parody.

This time the serial killer who likes to make his victims kill themselves has a sealed houseful of criminals to feed his twisted games and death-dealing devices. This serves to up the body count, tighten the action and give writers and actors more means to explore the film’s hidden theme.

Donnie Wahlberg is great as the burnt-out cop fighting to save his son, and Franky G makes a standout thug. But real honours go to Tobin Bell , whose Jigsaw Killer is unlike any we’ve seen before. But pay no attention to his philosophical rants they’re as irrelevant as Kevin Spacey’s in Seven.
