SHOCK WAVES (D: Pierre Mignault, Magny, Canada). 52 minutes. Some subtitles. Friday (April 18), 6:45 pm, Al Green Sunday (April 20), noon, ROM. Rating: NNN
Shock Waves takes a stark look at the war-ravaged country of Congo and at a kind of advocacy journalism rarely practised by Western mainstream media any more. Its point of view is that of the intrepid journalists at Radio Okapi, a station under UN protection that reaches the entire country. The subject matter is both fascinating and heart-rending, and the film covers a lot of ground in its short running time. It’s somewhat marred, though, by co-director Hélene Magny ‘s limp narration and the hard-to-read subtitles.
