Super 8 fest feeds on nostalgia

It’s cheap, it’s portable, it’s democratic. Practically anyone can do it, and a lot of people do it well. So what does Super 8 have that DV doesn’t? A built-in wash of grainy nostalgia, among other things.

This year’s Splice This! fest is putting that to good use, by the looks of it. In addition to submissions from all the usual local suspects (including Kika Thorne, instant_coffee, Christina Zeidler, Allyson Mitchell), Saturday night features a best-of compilation in which the curators look back yearningly over the festival’s last seven years and pick out their favourite moments.

Sunday night there’s a screening of selections from the Home Made Movie Project, in which Super 8 returns to its roots: strangers from holidays past mugging for the camera.

Also intriguing is a spotlight on artist Steve Topping, who will use a panoramic loop of the neighbourhood and a rotating projector to enable ordinary people to see through walls.
