Surprising Turn

Turn Left at the End of the World (Avi Nesher, Israel). 108 min. Subtitled. Sunday (May 8), 8:15 pm. Al Green. Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Many coming-of-age pics are set during the peace-and-love 60s, but this is the first to feature an Israeli settlement where French, Moroccan and Indian immigrant Jews coexist. This crowd-pleaser has something for everyone: disillusioned daughter issues, a culture-clashing cricket team and juicy puberty and wedding subplots.

Best is the friendship between coquette Nicole ( Neta Garty ) and proud Indian teen Sarah ( Liraz Charchi ), who help their families to see that, though they speak different languages, their triumphs and troubles are universal.

Garty is a star.
