THE DEEP END (Scott McGehee and David Siegel) isn’t as compellingly weird as McGehee and Siegel’s first film, Suture, but it turns a long-forgotten novel, The Blank Wall, into an absorbing cinematic thriller. Tilda Swinton finds herself trapped outside the law by blackmailers when she tries to cover up a crime that may have been committed by her son. The Deep End never overuses the spectacular northern Nevada setting, preferring to rely on the psychological complexity of its principal character and the tensile strength of Swinton’s performance. 108 minutes.
