Jack Black is an actor best taken in small doses, under a director who won't indulge him.
Thus, his best performances are in High Fidelity, where Stephen Frears fired him into the picture like a Katyusha rocket and let him jolt scenes with rude energy, and in King Kong, where the picture is so outsized that Black is normalized. School Of Rock surrounds him with kids who have their own energy and with the gloriously odd Joan Cusack.
Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny stars Black as Jack Black, lonesome rocker, who finds his rock partner, acoustic guitar whiz Kyle Gass (played by Gass). Their meeting gives birth to the acoustic metal duo Tenacious D, who set out in search of the Pick of Destiny, a Satanically powered guitar accessory.
It's a low-rent vanity production that assiduously integrates ideas from the often amusing Tenacious D videos into a cheap-looking movie that's barely good enough for pay cable.
Note to JB and KG: this horse is dead, so stop beating it.
