The Boys Are Back

THE BOYS ARE BACK directed by Scott Hicks, written by Allan Cubitt, from the novel by Simon Carr, with Clive Owen, Nicholas McAnulty and George MacKay. A Maple release. 104 minutes. Opens Friday (September 25). For venues, times and trailers, see Movies. Rating: NNNN

When his wife dies, grief-stricken Joe (Clive Owen) decides to raise his son (Nicholas McAnulty) using his self-made child-rearing philosophy of “Just say yes.” When a teenaged son (George MacKay) from his previous marriage shows up, things get complicated.[rssbreak]

Mining songs by the glorious Sigur Rós, director Hicks (Shine) and cinematographer Greig Fraser, who also shot the beautiful Bright Star, turn this into an absorbing story charged with deep emotion.

But they couldn’t have done it without Owen’s revelatory performance and the exceptional work of newcomer McAnulty.

Prepare to weep.
