The Bronze

THE BRONZE (Bryan Buckley). 100 minutes. Opens Friday (March 18). See listing. Rating: NNN

Here’s a pic that couldn’t exist without potty-mouthed comic Amy Schumer and Trainwreck. Hope Annabelle Greggory (co-writer Melissa Rauch of The Big Bang Theory), once a great gymnast, lives in the past, masturbating to her heroic athletic moment, and has the emotional development of a nine-year-old. Her hometown-hero status is threatened by rising star Maggie (Haley Lu Richardson), who looks like she might become a champion. When fate forces Hope to become her coach, will Hope help or sabotage her? It’s crude to the extreme, with a supremely unlikeable anti-heroine. But a very fierce Rauch makes it work, and Gary Cole is excellent as her beleaguered single dad. It’s all way over the top, but you can’t help but admire its audacity.
