The trailers for this horror flick about divers trapped in a cave beneath the sea look pretty spooky. Sort of like Alien with diving equipment and huge winged bats.
The fact that the film’s been bumped to the end of summer isn’t promising. Neither is the B-list cast, which includes Cole Hauser (Paparazzi), Eddie Cibrian (TV’s Third Watch) and the once-promising Lena Headey (Waterland, Mrs. Dalloway).
First-time director Bruce Hunt‘s worked on films like Dark City and The Matrix movies, so he should at least know how to make the thing look good. But screenwriters Michael Steinberg and Tegan West don’t bring stellar credits to the screen.
Against this week’s The Brothers Grimm, the still strong Red Eye and last week’s top scorer, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Cave could very well, er, cave at the box office. Opens Friday (August 26). Screened after press time – see review August 25 at www.nowtoronto.com/film.
