THE DEMONS OF EDEN (D: Alejandra Islas, Mexico). 72 minutes. Subtitled. Friday (April 18), 9 pm, Al Green; Monday (April 21), noon, ROM. Rating: NNN
Don't mess with Lydia Cacho. When the Mexican journalist sees exploitation, she'll stop at nothing to uncover it. Cacho learned of a child pornography ring operated by Jean Succar Kuri and protected by textile magnate Kamel Nacif Borge, and after publishing an exposé, was sued by Borge and arrested.
Recorded phone conversations between Borge and state authorities, including Puebla governor Mario Mar'n, revealed that Marn had Cacho jailed and abused as a favour to Borge.
The courageous Cacho never got legal satisfaction and had to leave the country. When the abusers laugh with their political cronies, we're privy to the appalling ways in which men protect their sexual interests. Infuriating.
