The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (directed by Garth Jennings, 110 min)
A few weeks before moviegoers travel to that other galaxy (the one far, far away), we finally get the screen version of Douglas Adams 's cult novel.
The Internet's buzzing over whether director Garth Jennings (known mostly for TV commercials) will get it right. Not that this is the first time the material's been adapted. It began as a radio series; the first novel came out in 1979 and was made into an acclaimed BBC-TV series in 1981.
The eclectic cast includes The Office's Martin Freeman , Sam Rockwell , Zooey Deschanel , Mos Def and (as the voice of The Book) Stephen Fry .
Reassuringly, Adams himself gets a co-screenwriter credit (with Chicken Run's Karey Kirkpatrick ), and Adams's sister, brother and daughter have cameos, so it sounds like Hitchhiker has its thumb - and heart - in the right place.
Opens Friday (April 29). For venues and times, see Movies, page 100. Screened after press time. See review April 28 at www.nowtoronto.com/film.
