Martha (Martina Gedeck) is a top-notch chef at a Hamburg restaurant. She’s also a compulsive workaholic who puts all her passion into her dishes, leaving her with a listless personal life. Martha is forced to open up emotionally when her sister dies and she’s left to care for her eight-year-old niece. We’ve seen this story many times before, but Gedeck’s turn as the dedicated professional who’s completely out of touch with her feelings is fascinating to watch. Also credit writer/director Nettelbeck for not rushing the proceedings, allowing the adult/child bond to evolve at a believable pace. 107 minutes.
