The Ring Two (directed by Hideo Nakata, 111 mins)
When the American version of The Ring came out in the fall of 2002, Naomi Watts ‘s career took off. She had already earned praise for Mulholland Drive, but this thriller about a journalist (Watts) who discovers a death-inducing video put her in a new category.
Now getting prestige projects (an Oscar nod for 21 Grams didn’t hurt) and popcorn movies (King Kong), Watts is back for the inevitable follow-up – fulfilling a contract, apparently. Hideo Nakata , the director of the original Ringu, which spawned the U.S. versions, directs, but the film has nothing to do with the Japanese sequels. Opens Friday (March 18).
