Three Miles North of Molkom

THREE MILES NORTH OF MOLKOM (D: Corinna Villari-McFarlane, Robert Cannan, UK). 112 minutes. Friday (April 18), 9:45 pm, Cumberland Sunday (April 20), 4 pm, Royal. Rating: NNNN

Directors Corinna Villari-McFarlane and Robert Cannan keep a straight face and open mind in their highly entertaining look at a New Age festival in Sweden where the soul-seeking participants really do hug trees. The directors focus on half a dozen subjects, who range from a famous Swedish pop singer to a hippy-dippy Hawaiian free spirit to a skeptical Aussie rugby player who joined up by accident and thinks he’s in a cult.

The film runs on a bit too long, but the power struggles and sexual dynamics — yes, there’s a Tantric workshop, folks — are great fun to watch. You may just leave the theatre smiling and chanting Om Shanti.
