SPY KIDS 2: THE ISLAND OF LOST DREAMS (Robert Rodriguez)
There were plenty of raised eyebrows when Robert Rodriguez signed on to write and direct Spy Kids in 2001. What was the maverick filmmaker responsible for El Mariachi, Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn doing directing a kids' movie? Well, Spy Kids turned out to be a smart kids' film that delighted both kids and adults; everybody likes to see kids granted the power to control their fate and play with cool gadgets. It helped that hunky Antonio Banderas and underrated Carla Gugino (The Center Of The World) brought sly, self-effacing humour to their roles as the spy parents saved by their wannabe spy kids (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara). In the sequel, the kids team up with rival spy siblings Gary and Gerti Giggles to fend off a mad scientist played by the always entertaining Steve Buscemi. 95 minutes.
