TRIAGE: DR. JAMES ORBINSKI’S HUMANITARIAN DILEMMA (Patrick Reed, Canada). 88 minutes. Tuesday (April 22), 9:15 pm, Bloor; April 27, 7:15 pm, ROM. Rating: NNNN
There's a certain kind of absence that creeps into the gaze of people who've seen too much. You'll see it a lot in the eyes of James Orbinski, Nobel honoree and former president of Doctors Without Borders.
Patrick Reed 's camera follows Orbinski on his return to Africa, revisiting the famine in Somalia and the genocide in Rwanda and confronting, as best he can, the unspeakable things he witnessed as a humanitarian aid worker.
Eschewing stylistic tricks to make a straightforward record of the trip, Reed crafts an efficient, effective portrait of a man whose simple insistence on acting and helping, rather than retreating to safety, defines him as nothing less than a hero.
