Uber-wasp Comedy

Rating: NNN

TOWN & COUNTRY (Peter Chelsom) is the long-awaited uber-WASP comedy starring Warren Beatty as a successful New York architect who celebrates his 25th anniversary to his devoted wife (Diane Keaton) with a sudden streak of infidelity, including sleeping with his best friend (Goldie Hawn). Initially, these privileged Manhattanites who live in penthouses, summer in the Hamptons and ski in Sun Valley are insufferable, but as the comedy grows increasingly farcical, their humanity comes through. Beatty is cinema’s most bemused leading man, good-looking and perpetually confused. It’s a great persona, and it propels the movie forward. The fact that the cast have worked so well with each other before — Hawn and Beatty in Shampoo, Keaton and Beatty in Reds — gives the film a comfortable feeling, and it’s no stretch to believe they all belong together. 106 minutes.
