WELCOME TO ENURMINO! (D: Aleksei Vakhrushev, Russia). 60 minutes. Subtitled. October 16, 9 pm, Al Green Theatre. Rating: NNNN
When Sarah Palin (falsely) claims she can see Russia from her window in Alaska, she’s supposedly talking about Enurmino, a tiny village at the northeastern edge of Siberia that’s one of the most remote spots on earth.
Aleksei Vakhrushev brought his camera there for a few months to watch the 314 inhabitants trudge through a season of walrus hunting, bartering and convivial misery.
It’s an enthralling portrait, though Vakhrushev never explains how any town with a constant supply of sled-dog puppies can have a suicide rate nine times higher than the Russian average.
