Young Cuts unreels

CALENDAR LEAVES (Martin Z. Dudzik) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

The Young Cuts Film Festival showcases films made by and starring young people from Canada and around the world.

Calendar Leaves, a 17-minute Canadian short, tells the story of Parker Jones (Brad Giglio), a suicidal 19-year-old who’s devastated by the apparent end of a relationship and thrown off-guard by his friends’ reactions to the news.

The film is beautifully shot, and Dudzik managed to score the rights to Thomas Newman’s (American Beauty, Six Feet Under) music. Unfortunately, the central revelation is awkwardly handled. If it’s meant to be a surprise, it comes way too early, and an opportunity is missed to add a final twist to deepen the mystery.

If the revelation is meant to be a catalyst for Parker’s introspection, there’s too little of it the voice-overs that supposedly give us a look inside his head merely state the obvious.

Dudzik shows real talent as a cinematographer, but as a writer he needs some practice. (Rainbow Cinemas Market Square and Fairview Mall, to October 30).
