See Dazed and Confused with NOW – for free!

“The scariest thought I ever had was when I totally devoted myself to filmmaking,” writer-director Richard Linklater says in this NOW interview from 2001. “I bought all the equipment and thought about film constantly – and then wondered, “God, wouldn’t it be the cruelest joke of all time if I, who rejected all the things I was really good at, found out I had no talent for filmmaking?”

Having since been nominated for five Oscars for his best-known films (Before Sunset, Before Midnight and Boyhood), Linklater first made waves through oddly endearing outsider characters that turned slacking into an art form. Released in 1993, Dazed and Confused came along at just the right time, as audiences facing middle age were looking back on life while a younger generation sought inspiration in ‘70s counterculture.

Though this film is the source of Matthew McConaughey’s inescapable catch phrase, “Alright, alright, alright,” its lasting relevance comes from the pitch-perfect elliptical conversations between teenagers who cling to bright futures while deeply fearing the prospect of not being cool.

This installment of NOW’s Free Flick Mondays at The Royal will be co-presented by Stiegl and Pixie. You’ll get to hear from Senior Film Writer Norm Wilner, who will be in attendance to introduce the movie.

The first 100 guests get free popcorn courtesy of The Royal, and there will also be Stiegl refreshments and gifts from Pixie available for purchase. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

We’ve created a quiz to help you get ready to see Dazed and Confused. How well do you know the movie? Match the quote with the character who said it to find out!
