Sexy Evil Genius

SEXY EVIL GENIUS (Alliance, 2013) D: Shawn Piller, w/ Seth Green, Katee Sackhoff. Rating: NN DVD package: NNN Rating: NN

You’ll be disappointed if you’re expecting something along the lines of Sharon Stone seducing and slaying in Basic Instinct. Flashbacks aside, Sexy Evil Genius is largely about five people in a bar, four of them trying to work out what the fifth is up to.

That fifth is Nikki (Katee Sackhoff), the titular SEG, who’s invited three ex-lovers she hasn’t seen in years to meet her fiancé, whom she describes as her “latest victim.” The ex-lovers (Seth Green, Michelle Trachtenberg, Harold Perinneau) know her as smart, scheming and a possibly insane killer. The fiancé (William Baldwin) has secrets. Who does Nikki plan to kill, how and why?

In the end, the plot disappoints, but along the way the cast has fun, with Trachtenberg and Green contributing some humour and director Shawn Piller keeping the action flowing and the tension mounting. He describes his well-designed visual plan in detail on the commentary.
