Shinjuku Incident

SHINJUKU INCIDENT (Sony, 2009) D: Derek Yee, w/ Jackie Chan, Daniel Wu. Rating: NNN DVD package: NNN Rating: NNN

This is like nothing Jackie Chan has ever done before. There’s no kung fu fighting, no spectacular stunts, no Chan working to sell himself as the lovable little guy. In their place, we get a straight-up gangster movie and Chan as actor, not action star.

A Chinese farm worker emigrates illegally to Tokyo, gets into petty crime for survival and organizes his fellow illegals into a gang for self-defence. This attracts the attention of the yakuza. Underworld politics and violence ensue.

Gangster movie fans will recognize a couple of nods to The Godfather and Scarface, but director Derek Yee keeps his story rooted in the reality of illegal immigrant life. He’s got a good eye for street life.

With his battered face, splay-footed walk, powerful body and quiet, watchful eyes, Chan delivers a credible portrait of a thoughtful working man. He talks about his acting goals in his interview and commentary on five scenes, which also covers a few production stories and his views on illegal immigration.

EXTRAS Chan selected scene commentary and interview. Widescreen. English, Chinese audio. English, French subtitles.
