Yeah, it’s gorgeous out and it’s patio season and everything, but eventually you’ll find yourself in the mood to catch a movie. I have to believe that. You understand.
If you’re looking for buried treasure, get yourself to The Royal for tonight’s Kung Fu Fridays presentation: Corey Yuen’s Yes, Madam!, a knockaround delight from 1985 pairing Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock as mismatched partners chasing after some stolen microfilm. It’s messy and ragged in exactly the right way, with inventive stunt choreography and minimal emotional stakes. Pre-show starts at 7 pm with the feature at 8 pm. Go wild.
On Saturday (June 18), the Christie Pits Film Festival is venturing all the way out to Queensway Park for a special off-site encore presentation of F.W. Murnau’s silent horror classic Nosferatu, accompanied by a live score composed and performed by Del Bel.
As with all Christie Pits screenings, admission is free and the film starts around sunset this evening’s pre-show entertainment will be provided by Toronto’s Rezonance Baroque Ensemble at 8 pm. And while this is the CPFF’s first extracurricular adventure, the fest will be back at its usual spot in Christie Pits Park every Sunday night from June 26 to August 28.
Finally, on Wednesday (June 22), you can show your cinematic Pride with a free screening of Mean Girls down at Harbourfront. Presented in collaboration with Pride Toronto and TIFF, the evening will be hosted by Daniel Franzese (who co-stars in the film as Damian) and feature a few special guests and surprises.
It’ll be simulcast on Synaptop, as well, so if you’re not able to make it down to the lake you can follow along at home. Full details are available at the event’s Facebook page, and please note the dress code: on Wednesdays we wear pink.
