Susan G. Coles Top 5 movies of 2015

1. CAROL (Todd Haynes)

No other film has taken me back so thrillingly to the desire and panic I felt as a teen coming out as this gorgeous, meticulously crafted, 1950s lesbian romance.

2. PHOENIX (Christian Petzold)

Anchored by Nina Hosss gripping performance, Petzolds story of a concentration camp survivor who fantasizes she can go back to her old life is the thriller of the year.

3. YOUTH (Paulo Sorrentino)

Fuelled by Luca Bigazzis spectacular images, Sorrentino subtly deals with the anxiety of aging while reminding us how jaw-droppingly beautiful film can be as a visual medium.

4. MUSTANG (Deniz Gamze Erguven)

A first-time director transforms her fury at Turkeys patriarchal system into a powerful work of art in this story of five teenagers confined to their home after theyve had too much fun celebrating the end of the school year. Opens January 15

5. GIRLHOOD (Celine Sciamma)

As in Sciammas previous film, Tomboy, theres hardly an adult in sight in this exhilarating pic about a black teen (the charismatic Karidja Toure) living with limited options in a Parisian housing project.
