MARLENE DIETRICH: HER OWN SONG Signed to portray the German femme fatale in a just-announced biopic, Gwyneth Paltrow will no doubt be studying this first-rate 2001 doc that follows the legendary actress from her music hall debut to her screen icon days. Never-seen home movies (first-time director David Riva is Dietrich’s grandson) show the extraordinary person behind the enduring image. 10 pm on TVO

VELVET GOLDMINE (1998, dir Todd Hayes, w/ Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Toni Collette, Christian Bale and Eddie Izzard) Glam-rock pastiche finds reporter Bale tracking Citizen Kane-style the mysterious disappearance of Bowie-esque rocker Rhys-Meyers after a faked onstage suicide. Watch for real-life Bowie muse Lindsay Kemp as – what else? – a pantomime dame, and Placebo’s Brian Molko as the leader of the Flaming Creatures. 12:10 am on Showcase
