The Brothers Bloom

THE BROTHERS BLOOM (Rian Johnson). 109 minutes. Opens Friday (May 22). For venues and times see movies. Rating: NN

Don’t ya hate it when a great cast is wasted? The Brothers Bloom, for example, stars two Oscar winners, but to no avail.

Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo star as brothers specializing in the con who set out to make an eccentric heiress (Rachel Weisz) their next victim.

Weisz does give an endearing performance as the ditzy rich girl fighting boredom by teaching herself new tricks. Unfortunately, holes in the plot – one huge chasm leaves out how she gets away with breaking into a museum – and slapstick sight gags make this pic, despite a stab at getting serious near the end, just silly.

Scam movies don’t work unless you con the audience at the same time, and The Brothers Bloom won’t fool you for a second.
