THE GUILT TRIP (Paramount, 2012) D: Anne Fletcher, w/ Barbra Streisand, Seth Rogen. Rating: NN; Blu-ray package: NNN Rating: NN
For the first hour, Joyce (Barbra Streisand) never shuts up. She directs a steady stream of well-intentioned nagging at her adult son (Seth Rogen), and when she's not doing that, she's prying into his love life and babbling cheerfully about trivia. Rogen's Andrew takes it with a smile and gritted teeth. Nevertheless, he invites her on a week-long road trip during which he hopes to place his invention, a superior cleaning product, with a large retailer. He's a terrible salesman.
Maybe Streisand is funny if she reminds you of your mother, but she and Rogen are basically doing one joke over and over again, which gets old fast. Things pick up a little when Joyce eats a 50-ounce steak (the best scene) and when mother and son have the obligatory air-clearing fight.
The extras offer lots of on-set footage, fascinating info about how the crew faked the steak and the road trip, and writer Dan Fogelman talks about his real-life road trip with his mother.
