The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto

THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO (Anchor Bay, 2009) D: Rob Zombie, w/ Tom Papa, Paul Giamatti. Rating: N DVD package: NN Rating: N

The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto is nothing if not brilliant. And it is not brilliant.

I counted one comic idea (the love affair between crime fighter Suzi X and her robot), one funny joke (it’s okay to masturbate to comic books) and two lively voice performances: co-writer Tom Papa, who smarms it up as Superbeasto, ex-wrestler, celebrity in his own mind, titty bar junkie and alleged crime fighter (he doesn’t actually do much), and Paul Giamatti who practically sings his role as Dr. Satan, the high school nerd turned super-villain who kidnaps mercenary stripper Velvet Von Black (Rosario Dawson).

The rest of it is witless tit jokes, splatter, banter and horror movie homages that don’t pay off. Occasionally, lame soundtrack songs point out how bad the show is. They make it worse.

The animation is competent.

Some of the deleted and alternate scenes are funnier than the movie.

EXTRAS Deleted and alternate scenes. Widescreen.
