The classic conflict between gun-toting settler (John Wayne) and citified lawyer (James Stewart) embodied in the titular outlaw (Lee Marvin) and the girl they both love (Vera Miles) allows for assured performances all around, even as the polished script subverts their established personas and raises several ironies.
