The worst movie of the year?

DELGO (Marc Adler, Jason Maurer). 90 minutes. Opens Friday (December 12). See film times. Rating: N

Delgo stumbles into theatres in the middle of awards season as perhaps the year’s worst movie.

It’s an animated kiddie fantasy (though I doubt even kids will take to it) set in a faraway land brimming with critters that look like lizards, gremlins and just about everything you can find in a bento box.

Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt voice the reptilian-looking Delgo and the winged princess Kyla, star-crossed lovers who must avert a war between their rival clans.

The plot is (thankfully) brisk and by the numbers, imparting lessons of tolerance and forgiveness. The ensemble voice cast of has-beens (as well as Anne Bancroft, Burt Reynolds, Val Kilmer and Kelly Ripa) can’t liven up the lead-footed romance, the humour worthy of Jar Jar Binks and the PS2-grade animation.

And the movie doesn’t even have the cuteness factor going for it, with characters so ugly they make you squeamish. At best, there’s a villain that resembles Paula Abdul.
