The Year My Parents Went On Vacation (Mongrel, 2006) D: Cao Hamburger, w/ Michel Joelsas, Germano Haiut. Rating: NNNN; DVD package: NNN
I covered this a few weeks ago, and, suffering a case of monkeys on the brain, mistakenly got both release date and distributor wrong. In fact, it's out this week from Mongrel. Here's a brief recap. In 1970 Brazil, with the military dictatorship at its height and his parents on the run, 10-year-old Mauro is left stranded in his grandfather's apartment. He comes to terms with his new life but never loses his sense of exile.
Understated acting and strong visual storytelling convey clear, complex emotion, quiet humour and an undercurrent of menace, even when the movie looks like a mild, kid-centred comedy.
