ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES

SPECIAL PRESENTATION D: Pan Nalin. India. 104 min. Sep 18, 9 pm Elgin Sep 19, 2:45 pm Scotiabank 1, Sep 20, 12:15 pm Scotiabank 2. See listings. Rating: NNN

Nalins ensemble piece introduces five women, all of whom except the alpha female capitalist Su (Sandhya Mridul) are getting royally jerked around by sexists in the workplace. Soon theyve assembled to celebrate the nuptials of their friend Frieda (Sarah Jane Dias), and the pic settles into a study of their relationships and their personal struggles, at work and with one another.

The ambitious film is all over the place. Nalins put way too much on his plate like, just about every womens issue and the personal connections are a little too vaguely drawn. But the dialogue is wholly believable, the exuberant opening sequence is stellar, and when the pic opens up, revealing the social realities in the way of female empowerment, it packs a punch.

Keep an eye on him.
