Avant-garde artist Lewis’s first feature is a contemplative journey through the urban world in sumptuous, constantly moving shots, starting in wintry Toronto, shifting to Paris for a visit to the Louvre and ending up on a night drive through the streets of São Paulo.
Playing out mostly in silence, Invention gives us the space to interpret its imagery however we wish. I came away thinking about individual isolation in the face of increasing population density, the delight of finding a quiet space in a bustling city and the human cost of modern living.
