The Artist’s Jean Dujardin flashes that cocksure grin in this adventurous romance as composer Antoine, who travels to India to score a Romeo And Juliet adaptation and finds his own star-crossed lover in Elsa Xylberstein’s earthy, soulful Anna.
There’s a palpable chemistry and passion to root for between these stars – not to mention their snappy dialogue. Antoine and Anna explore spirituality, ponder pure love and constantly question their slow-burning feelings for each other, which will inevitably devastate since each already has a charming and affectionate significant other.
Unfortunately director Lelouch messes with a good thing, getting sidetracked by that Indian film-within-a-film and throwing in a stupid dénouement that doesn’t fit with the compelling and intimate moments earlier.
It all complicates a beautiful love story.
