These are the most anticipated new titles hitting Netflix Canada in June 2021, including Feel Good season 2, a tribute to filmmaker Satyajit Ray and the Toronto-shot Sex/Life.

What we can’t wait to watch

Sweet Tooth

A live-action adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s acclaimed Vertigo comic-book – set in a world where a virus has depopulated the Earth, and might also have caused human babies to be born with animal characteristics. Or maybe the hybrids caused the virus, nobody knows. Our guide through this world is deer boy Gus (Christian Convery), who was raised in the woods by his father (Will Forte), and who will join a mysterious stranger (Nonso Anozie, of The Laundromat and Artemis Fowl) for an odyssey beyond his imagination. Ray

We’ll see whether Netflix India’s upcoming tribute to Satyajit Ray will be worthy of the social realist Bengali filmmaker or sacrilege. The anthology series adapts four short stories written by Ray, with Gangs Of Wasseypur star Manoj Bajpayee among those jumping at the opportunity to work with the cinematic icon’s material. Ray, the director behind The Apu Trilogy, was the subject of a TIFF retrospective in 2014, which honoured his delicate craft and empathetic portraits of humble people finding their bearings during times of seismic social change. Awake

An inexplicable event wipes out the world’s technology… and also renders every person on the planet incapable of falling asleep. (Which is ironic, because technology has been keeping human beings from sleeping for the last decade or so.) Our guide through this chaotic new world is a former soldier (Gina Rodriguez) whose daughter might hold the key to humanity’s salvation. Shamier Anderson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Frances Fisher and Gil Bellows co-star; Mark Raso, maker of the intimate character studies Copenhagen and Kodachrome, directs. So we’re intrigued. June 9

Sex/Life

This Toronto-made adaptation of BB Easton’s 44 Chapters About 4 Men stars Billie Connelly as a suburban mom whose libidinous life before marriage comes knocking on her front door. The healthy dose of erotica was among the major productions in Toronto that was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, picking back with enhanced social distancing protocols, which should make the intimacy on screen… noteworthy? America: The Motion Picture

Written by superhero screenwriter Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings), directed by Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo veteran Matt Thompson, this animated comedy turns the creation myth of the United States into actual myth, with the voices of Channing Tatum, Bobby Moynihan, Andy Samberg, Killer Mike, Will Forte, Jason Mantzoukas, Simon Pegg (as King James, of course) and Archer’s Judy Greer, Amber Nash and Lucky Yates. Apparently the story spans centuries, because why wouldn’t it. June 30

Solid bets

Feel Good (season 2)

The first season of Mae Martin and Joe Hampson’s remarkable series arrived the week the world stopped, so it’s sort of nice to see the second season drop just as things seem hopeful again – especially since hope is such a key element of the show. We’re hoping the fictional version of Mae reconnects with George (Charlotte Ritchie), the girlfriend she broke up with at the end of last season; we’re also hoping Mae works through the profound trauma she’s clearly carrying, which previously manifested in panic attacks and substance abuse and looks to be getting worse this season. We’re also hoping the show spends some more time with Lisa Kudrow and Adrian Lukis are as Mae’s parents, because they’re just the best. And the worst. June 4

Lupin (season 1, part 2)

If you caught the first half of Lupin when it arrived on Netflix in January, you will be very happy to hear that the second set of five episodes arrives this month, and picks up right where the first left off, with charismatic thief Assane Diop (Omar Sy) determined to bring down the villainous Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) for his decades-old crimes. It won’t be easy, but this show delights in elaborate schemes, unlikely alliances, shocking twists of fate and the use of Ludivine Sagnier as a wild card… all the stuff that makes French heist stories so much fun. June 11

Psycho (1960)

After the trashy but amusing homage in The Woman In The Window, Netflix is offering up a palette cleanser with a shot of pure Hitchcock. You could argue forever whether the master of suspense’s masterpiece is Rear Window or Vertigo or Psycho. But its Psycho, a perspective shifting slasher movie about a woman (Janet Leigh) who ends up in a motel run by an infantile serial killer, that is his most chilling. June 2

Long Shot

It barely made a dent when it hit theatres two years ago, but Jonathan Levine’s odd-couple charmer – which pairs Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen as the U.S. secretary of state and the opinionated journalist she hires as her speechwriter for a presidential run –has picked up a considerable following since hitting VOD, to the point that it’s considered one of the best romantic comedies in recent years. Certainly none of the others offers the spectacle of Bob Odenkirk and Alexander Skarsgård as world leaders, or a chemistry as weirdly believable as the one between the guy from Knocked Up and the former Furiosa. Don’t underestimate them. June 21
