These are the most anticipated new titles hitting Netflix Canada in August 2021, including the sports doc series UNTOLD, The Chair starring Sandra Oh, the Sauble Beach-set Motel Makeover, a tell-all documentary about painter Bob Ross and Clickbait starring Adrian Grenier.
The Chair
Created by actor/producer Amanda Peet and Annie Julia Wyman, this academic comedy stars Sandra Oh as the first woman of colour to chair her Ivy League university’s faltering English department, and Jay Duplass as the newly widowed professor she’s trying to pull out of a spiral. (Bob Balaban and Holland Taylor are around as aging faculty members, too.) And in case you missed the most important part: Sandra Oh is back doing comedy again! It’s been far too long. August 20
Motel Makeover
June Motel founders April Brown and Sarah Sklash have landed a Netflix docuseries. After revamping an old motel in Prince Edward County as a wine-country getaway in 2017, the pair expanded their boutique experience brand to Sauble Beach. This six-episode series will follow the friends-turned-entrepreneurs as they reno that second property near Lake Huron. Read more about the show here. August 25

UNTOLD
Netflix is taking on ESPN in the realm prestige sports documentaries. Hot on the heels of Oscar-nominated director Garrett Bradley’s doc series about Japanese tennis sensation Naomi Osaka, the streamer is debuting a five-part anthology that will go deep into pivotal moments in sports history. Each week a new 80-minute film will debut, starting with Malice In The Palace, which recounts the 2004 basketball brawl that began after Ron Artest (now named Metta Sandiford-Artest) charged the stands after a fan threw a drink. Future docs will focus on track star-turned-reality star Caitlyn Jenner, boxer Christy Martin and tennis champ Mardy Fish. August 10
Misha And The Wolves
Hailed at Sundance and Hot Docs screening, Sam Hobkinson’s documentary about Belgian author Misha Defonseca – who wrote a book about surviving the Holocaust as a seven-year-old by sheltering with a pack of wolves, only to admit she’d fabricated the story a decade later – lands on Netflix, where it’ll fit in just fine among the other bizarre true stories. August 11

Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal And Greed
TV painter Bob Ross is known for his huge ‘fro and soothing persona, but this juicy-sounding documentary from Lorena and Sasquatch director Joshua Rofé promises to lift the curtain on how the “battle for his business empire cast a shadow over his happy trees.” Ross died 25 years ago but The Joy Of Painting host has undergone a pop culture revival recently thanks to memes and an ill-fated impersonation on RuPaul’s Drag Race. August 25
Brand New Cherry Flavor
This eight-part adaptation of Todd Grimson’s cult novel stars Rosa Salazar (Man Seeking Woman, Undone, Alita: Battle Angel) as an aspiring filmmaker in early 90s Hollywood who’s immediately drawn into a world of calculating scenesters, backstabbing producers and possibly curses. It’s been adapted by Channel Zero producers Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion, so expect some serious atmosphere and an eclectic cast, including The Good Place’s Manny Jacinto and a very creepy Catherine Keener. August 13

Beckett
After racing around Europe to save the world in Tenet, John David Washington is still in motion in this thriller from director Ferdinando Cito Filomarino (Antonia.) and producer Luca Guadagnino, playing an American tourist who survives a car wreck to find himself on the run from the police, the government and pretty much everybody – for reasons he can’t fully understand. Alicia Vikander, Boyd Holbrook and Vicky Krieps co-star. August 13
Hit & Run
Shot in multiple countries, this nine-part series stars co-creator Lior Raz (Fauda) as Segev Azulay, an extremely resourceful man seeking answers – and possibly revenge – after his wife is run down in Tel Aviv. The Affair’s Sanaa Lathan and Scandal’s Gregg Henry co-star; the directors include Mike Barker (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Neasa Hardiman (Sea Fever). August 6

Clickbait
Going viral takes a horrific twist in this eight-part series, which opens with an ordinary man (Adrian Grenier) popping up on a website, holding a sign that says “At 5 million views, I die.” The show follows the race to find him and stop whatever’s happening, seen through the eyes of a number of different people, including his sister (Zoe Kazan), his wife (Betty Gabriel) and the cop (Phoenix Raei) trying to find him.
