Shot in an appealingly undisguised Winnipeg, the romantic comedy Lovesick is a passable debut from Winnipeg writer/director Tyson Caron, even if its utterly undistinguished in its story and its vision.
Starring Jacob Tierney, Jessica Pare, Jay Baruchel and Ali Tataryn, Lovesick not to be confused with the newly retitled British series Scrotal Recall is just the latest quirky indie about a sad artist (Tierney) who learns to get over his broken heart by dating someone else (Tataryn), told without the slightest twist or variation on its narrative trajectory.
The dialogue shows flashes of wit, and the performers are all perfectly engaging and close followers of Canadian cinema will appreciate the slight disconnect of seeing Montreal fixtures Tierney, Pare and Baruchel playing Manitobans but every choice Caron makes feels like the least challenging option.
Well, except for one: the conception of Tataryns Nora, whos carrying some baggage the movie never fully unpacks. But what we do see is enough to make me wish Lovesick had been told from her perspective rather than its heros.
