You don’t often hear DJs describe themselves as a “scratch band.” Nor do you hear such boundary-bursting, free-form audio compositions spring to life from a quartet of Technics 1200s. Toronto turntablists-plus Professor Fingers and Steptone, aka iNSiDEaMiND(June 13, Social, 11pm), have been scratching and slicing their way to their peculiar perch in the fertile Toronto DJ family tree since their first project, the FragMental EP.
Their ambitious new concept album, Scatterpopia, incubating for a fall 2008 release, is a Ninja Tune-ish time and space odyssey set in an imaginary realm. Featuring The Tiniest Spy b/w A Matter Of Time, remixed by local sound sculptors Circle Research and LAL’s Nick Murray, it should raise eyebrows and open eardrums.
iNSiDEaMiND’s uncompromising audio ethos is almost guaranteed to polarize listeners, but if you’re built for such stuff, know that these two scientists are enthusiastically exploring experimentation for your appreciation.
