#2. Cool bands from all over the world

Rating: NNNNN

In a further attempt to increase its international profile, NXNE went globe-trotting again this year, plucking an array of bands from all corners of the world. From curiosity alone, check out India’s Menwhopause (June 14, Kathedral, 10 pm), a quintet of players who make gentle pysched-out rock, or South African Chris Letcher (June 12, Dakota Tavern, 1 am), whose disquieting pop has stirred interest in his adopted home of London.

Same country of residence, entirely different approach, synth-driven Domino-signed punks These New Puritans (June 12, Reverb, 1 am) arrive fresh from a Kills support slot with a slew of glowing write-ups under their belts, while ska-punk metal benders Muchos Backflips! (June 14, Bovine Sex Club, midnight) reach their destination by way of another convenient festival city – Austin, Texas.

Also in town are the Monotonix (June 12, Reverb, 11 pm Bovine, 2 am June 14, Sneaky Dee’s, midnight), a Jimi Hendrix-style three-piece freak-out from Tel Aviv, and Stoogey Swedish three-chord rockers the Oholics (June 12-14, Silver Dollar).
