#21. Moneen

Rating: NNNNN

After years of exuberantly positive live shows and Kenny Bridges’s off-kilter humour, some people were a little taken aback by Moneen’s brooding last album, The Red Tree. A just-released DVD (It All Started With A Red Stripe) that shows the group sweating through Red Tree’s recording helps explain why the end result felt so anguished. Fans wanting to know where the band’s heads are at nowadays shouldn’t miss this NXNE appearance, since the Brampton boys, having recently lost long-time drummer Peter Krpan, are nearing the completion of their fourth record and will surely be previewing new material. Moneen are at the El Mocambo (upstairs) June 13, 11 pm.
