SUNN 0))) Black One (Southern Lord)
Creepy-ass hypnotic blackened doom metal with a terrifyingly low end. Apparently, the band locked their claustrophobic vocalist inside a coffin to record his bloodcurdling screamy bits, so, y’know, it’s pretty cheerful stuff.
NATTEFROST Terrorist (Nekronaut, Pt. 1) (Season of Mist)
Scathing, misanthropic and thrashy black metal with cold, buzz-saw guitars from the singer of Carpathian Forest. It’s essentially the musical equivalent of being really, really pissed off, featuring song titles like Hellcommander and Black Metal Suicide (Claws Of Perdition).
TWILIGHT (Southern Lord)
Twilight is kind of a “supergroup” made up of some of the more prolific musicians in American black metal. Cacophonous, lo-fi production and amazingly frightening, grim vocals make it sound like it was recorded in a dungeon.
BLOOD RITUAL Black Grimoire (Moribund)
Judging by the elaborate instruction guide on satanic worship and ritual practice in the liner notes, and by the fact that it was formed by a member of the Church of Satan, it’d be safe to assume that this black/death metal band is probably in cahoots with the horned one Himself.
NILE Annihilation Of The Wicked (Relapse)
Insanely fast and technically complex ancient-Egyptian-themed metal that incorporates traditional instrumentations alongside vocals that’d put Cookie Monster to shame. Accompanied by short essays explaining the historical and religious significance of the lyrics.
