Local booking legend Dan Burke has always had a strange relationship with Toronto’s music festivals. While he used to just rebel against them by running his own independent anti-festival, for the past two years NXNE has quietly incorporated his NeXT showcases into its own programming – but with a catch. As it stands now, Burke’s showcases constitute a sort of micro-nation within NXNE – a place where the normal festival rules don’t all apply and pretty much anything can happen.
This year Burke has partnered with Davy Love’s local 45rpm imprint Magnificent Sevens to import currently under-the-radar Swedish garage sensations the Oholics to headline a three-night stint at the Silver Dollar. As usual, Burke’s lineup also includes an airtight assembly of strong local talents, this time selected specifically to augment the Oholics’ swaggering 60s-psych-influenced rock ’n’ roll. The solidest of the three nights looks to be Friday’s all-star Magnificent Sevens showcase, which features the Oholics, Japan’s ok city ok (9 pm), plus top-shelf locals the Diableros (1 am), the Mark Inside (11 pm), Action Makes (10 pm), Bird Week (8 pm), and the Hoa Hoa’s (2 am). With such strong local support, the Oholics better bring their A-game.
