Toronto-based hip-hop/R&B music collective 88 Days of Fortune is recapping the year that was with They Live, a 12-track mixtape featuring music by members Witch Prophet, Above Top Secret, Latasha Alcindor, Stas Thee Boss, Sugg Savage, Sassy Black and Akoko.
While much of the attention lavished on T.O.’s hip-hop scene has focused on a certain shirtless Instagrammer who may or may not have been dating tennis champ Serena Williams, the DIY collective shows that the grassroots is still going strong.

Above Top Secret (SunSun and Ayo Leilani) had a particularly strong year, winning Harbourfront Centre’s Soundclash Music Award in July. Leilani also landed a sound-based residency at Toronto Island-based Artscape Gibraltar Point. The 88 Days founder is using the program to work on her new album, The Golden Octave.
The next resident to participate in that program is Cheldon Paterson, aka SlowPitchSound, a sound artist and turntablist setting up shop on the Island through December 29.
