4th Pyramid – The Sky Belongs To The Stars

Rating: NNN

Rarely does a modern hip-hop head associate the genre with disco, possibly history’s least street-credy music. But Toronto MC/producer 4th Pyramid effectively brings the two together twice on his new 10-song EP: Friday Nights borrows from Arabesque’s 1978 tune of the same name, and Is It Over samples 1977’s Angel In Your Arms.

The rest of the album has its moments, including the opening Rich Kidd-produced banger, Stay Up High, and A Little Out Of Line, featuring Ben Stevenson, which nods to the woozy Noah “40” Shebib sound for which the screwface capital is currently known. The rapper’s subject matter isn’t so new – getting fucked up, general braggadocio – and his overuse of “bitch” is tiresome. (Rappers are supposed to be wordsmiths, aren’t they?)

The various moods showcase production versatility, and individually each song works well. But a more fully realized theme would have made a good collection even better.
