8Doogymoto

8Doogymoto Minimalistico (Soundslike) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

If the name doesn’t tip you off, 8doogymoto are a very weird band. Made up of two German guys and one Japanese gal, they combine elements from experimental house – no big surprise considering that this is on Matthew Herbert’s Soundslike label – with surreal pop, hiphop, bossa nova and folk music. The title track takes a dancehall rhythm made out of glitchy micro-samples and twists it into a sound vaguely reminiscent of Stereolab once Fumi Udo starts singing. Very original-sounding and quite pleasant considering the general strangeness of their vibe. My roommate went out and bought two copies after hearing it for the first time, quite a testament considering how easy it would have been to just burn ’em.
