ACTION MAKES Upper Down (independent) Rating: NN
You have to figure that Action Makes spent the better part of the 90s holed up in a wood-panelled basement in the wilds of Peterborough, smoking pot and listening to early Hip albums, Pearl Jam's Ten and the entire Nirvana catalogue. That's what you hear on their Upper Down debut, a two-part concept album of lurching macho rock (Upper) and whiny ponderous rock (Down). The melodies are bland, and the vocals alternate between a Downie-esque bark and plaintive Cobain-style moaning. While I could accept it from Kurt, knowing he was dealing with a heroin addiction, I can't from Action Makes. Action Makes drop Upper Down at Clinton's Saturday (July 26).
