adrian Sherwood Never Trust A Hippy (Real World) Rating: NNNNN Rating: NNNNN
As the roots radical behind the On-U Sound label, Adrian Sherwood brought his kaleidoscopic mixes to records by Dub Syndicate, Creation Rebel and Prince Far I, taking the bin-shaking blueprints of King Tubby and Prince Jammy and launching dub into the present. Remarkably, though, before now Sherwood's worked strictly behind the mixing desk, never on his own projects. Never Trust A Hippy shows that Sherwood the artist is on a par with the producer. At times the disc sounds like a conflation of the On-U Sound catalogue, rumbling along with the disorienting psych-dub of vintage African Head Charge sessions and featuring appearances by On-U regulars like Keith LeBlanc, Ship McDonald and Bongo IA Bingi Noah. As impressive, though, are Sherwood's forays into digi-dub and dancehall rhythms. Bringing in hot upsetter and Diwali creator Lenky for a couple of tracks is a clear sign that Sherwood isn't stuck in the past, but rather is still committed to determining dub's future.
