The latest results of Robert Pollard’s moonlighting experiments find the Guided by Voices song machine continuing his Airport 5 partnership with old running mate Tobin Sprout and trying to foster a long-distance studio affair with Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan under the name Go Back Snowball. On both, Pollard bellows his obscure lyrical fragments, leaving his collaborators to create the appropriate noises. There are some great ideas (the Airport 5 project clicks with greater frequency) but, as usual with Pollard, everything seems half-finished. Just pleasant distractions, then.
