ALAIN CARON 5 (Norac Records) Rating: NNN
For his fifth album, jazz-fusion bassist Alain Caron of UZEB notoriety displays an originality that the title lacks. His music may have been born in smoky jazz clubs, but his latest wouldn't be out of place in a hipster joint either. Caron keeps his masterful bass-playing loose and funky, choosing on most tracks to lock in with drummer Tony Albino and lay a rock-solid rhythmic foundation that allows the other soloists to flourish. Samples and loops add to a spacey, introspective atmosphere that is decidedly laid-back. As for Caron, he adheres to the doctrine that it's not what you play but what you don't play that matters.
Alain Caron drops into Lula Lounge for a two-night stand Wednesday and Thursday (February 25-26).
