Album Review

Having revolutionized the sophisticated chill-out funk/dub scene with their K&D Sessions, well-blunted Vienna production duo Kruder & Dorfmeister return large with this elaborate label retrospective.

G-Stone Book is part label showcase, part fashion guide, part manifesto. The lavish set, complete with a 300-plus-page book, chronicles the duo’s world tour, mixing in bizarre fashion layouts with snapshots from Tokyo and Brighton as well as a K&D interview and an e-mail exchange on the nature of the Vienna sound. There’s also a CD, featuring slo-mo club funk from Kruder & Dorfmeister and their various offshoots, including Tosca and Peace Orchestra. All glossy and designed to death, G-Stone Book is remarkably impractical. It’s also the logical extension of everything K&D stand for. Even without their Madonna remix, world domination is assured.
